October 9 (Bloomberg)--Libyan opposition involved in a second day of street battles with troops loyal to Muammar Qaddafi in his home town of Sirte.
Fighters tried to dislodge snipers in the coastal town, the BBC reported today, citing the President of the National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdel Jalil. The NTC, which took control of most of the country in August when Qaddafi Tripoli, the capital, lost for the past two weeks has said that they were close to capturing the city. The fall of Libya Sirte would be an important step in the transition to democracy. To the North African nation through elections a new Government will be announced only after the Transitional Council of troops complete control over the city, Mahmoud Jibril, the Acting Prime Minister, said on 3 October.--Editors: Digby Lidstone, Louis Meixler.
